You may have seen this graphic visualizing the relative speeds of accessing L1, L2 cache, RAM, and a disk seeking. Jeff Dean expounds in a presentation including other similar measurements, and hacker news hypothesizes about other analogies. I’m surprised nobody hit on this one, though:
